Expand Any Photo to Fit Your Layout
Have you ever taken a great photo, then found it didn’t quite fit the space you wanted to use it in? Maybe you need a square image for a profile picture or more room beside someone in a portrait for a greeting card.
Maybe a landscape photo is too narrow for a particular layout or a portrait needs more space around the subject. Instead of simply cropping the image further, PhotoPad can use AI to expand the image beyond its original borders.
Cropping can make a photo fit, but it does so by cutting away parts of the image. AI Uncrop takes the opposite approach: it adds new space around your photo so you can adjust its shape without cutting off the original subject.
PhotoPad’s AI Uncrop tool creates new image content beyond the photo’s original edges. For example, it can add more sky above a landscape or extend the background beside a person.
What Exactly Is AI Uncrop?
AI Uncrop, also known as AI image expansion, is a way of extending an image beyond its original edges.
Imagine that you have a photo of a building in front of a landscape. The building is positioned close to the edge of the frame, leaving very little space around it. If you need a wider image, you could crop the photo, but that might cut off part of the house. With AI Uncrop, you can expand the image and let the tool generate more of the surrounding sky. Rather than zooming out, which is impossible after the photo has been taken, AI can generate additional background outside the original image.
In simple terms:
- Cropping removes parts of a photo.
- Uncropping adds new space around it.
The result is a larger image with new content surrounding the original photo. You could, for example, turn a vertical image into a square without cropping the top and the bottom. Instead, the tool will expand the sides.
It works especially well when the area around your subject has a clear background, such as sky, grass, water, or a plain wall.
Uncropping Step-by-Step
Step 1: Open Your Photo
Launch PhotoPad and open the image you want to expand.
Step 2: Open the AI Image Tool
Select: Effects → AI Tools → Uncrop
Step 3: Choose How Much to Expand
Select the shape you need, such as square or wide. You can also choose a custom size and adjust where the original photo sits in the expanded image.
Step 4: Generate the Expanded Image
With just one click PhotoPad creates the additional image area outside the original borders. Generated areas can sometimes look unexpected; you can try different settings if the result doesn’t look right.
Step 5: Save Your Image
Once you are happy with the result, you can create the expanded image as a new project, print it or save it to your computer.
